These explosions led to a massive recall by Flushmate, makers of the high pressure flushing systems. The affected toilets were made between 1997 to 2011 and include various models. The company estimates that it is recalling over 3 million toilet systems and is asking consumers to stop using the toilets immediately until they receive the repair kit. However, the repair kits didn’t stop consumers from filing a class action suit which eventually settled for 18 million dollars. The settlement fund is intended to cover any installation expenses for the remedy kit or replacement toilet and any property damage caused by the toilets. Some plaintiffs complained of injuries requiring stitches from the flying shards while others were left with damaged walls from the material impact. The Flushmate system was installed in toilets made by American Standard, Crane, Ecotech, Eljer, Gerber, Kohler, Manseca, Mansfield, Orion, St. Thomas, Universal Rundle, Vitra, Vitromex, and Western Pottery. Consumers that have these models should check whether their particular model has been recalled to avoid any serious injuries.
