Crosner Legal has filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California alleging deceptive labeling practices involving a popular packaged pizza crust product. The lawsuit seeks relief on behalf of California consumers who purchased the product based on allegedly misleading “No Artificial Preservatives” claims.

According to the complaint, the product packaging prominently states that it contains “No Artificial Flavors or Preservatives,” leading reasonable consumers to believe the product is free from synthetic additives. However, the lawsuit alleges that the product contains ascorbic acid, which is a chemically synthesized ingredient that functions as a preservative.

The filing further claims that ascorbic acid is widely recognized as a preservative because it helps prevent deterioration and maintain freshness. Images included in the complaint show the product label displaying the “No Artificial Preservatives” claim alongside an ingredient list that includes ascorbic acid, highlighting the alleged contradiction.

Plaintiff alleges that consumers relied on the labeling when making purchasing decisions and paid a premium for a product they believed to be free of artificial preservatives. The lawsuit asserts claims under California consumer protection laws and seeks damages, restitution, and injunctive relief to stop the alleged deceptive practices.

Why This Matters: Consumers increasingly seek products marketed as natural or free from artificial ingredients. When labeling allegedly misrepresents what a product contains, it can mislead consumers and undermine trust. This lawsuit aims to hold companies accountable for accurate labeling and protect consumers from deceptive marketing practices.
