Crosner Legal Files Class Action Lawsuit Against P&G for False Advertising

Apr 15, 2025 | Class Actions, Consumer Protection

Crosner Legal has filed a class action lawsuit against Procter & Gamble (P&G), alleging false advertising and deceptive business practices in the marketing of its ZzzQuil PURE Zzzs sleep aid. The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California, claims that P&G misled consumers by branding the product as “drug-free,” “natural,” and “non-habit-forming,” despite the fact that it contains synthetic melatonin; a hormone with significant physiological effects.

P&G markets ZzzQuil PURE Zzzs as a gentle, plant-based remedy for sleep, leading consumers to believe they are purchasing a safe, all-natural alternative to prescription sleep medications. The product is marketed using buzzwords like “pure” and “natural” to create an image of a wholesome, non-harmful product. However, the lawsuit asserts that while melatonin is commonly sold over the counter, it is a potent hormone that directly impacts brain chemistry and sleep cycles. Studies have shown that melatonin use, especially over time, can lead to side effects like next-day grogginess, dependency, and long-term disruption of sleep patterns.

California’s consumer protection laws prohibit deceptive advertising and false claims, and the lawsuit argues that P&G’s marketing misled consumers into believing that PURE Zzzs was a safe, natural alternative. Instead, consumers were unknowingly purchasing a product containing a synthetic substance capable of altering their neurological functions, without clear warnings or adequate labeling.

The class action also highlights that P&G’s marketing strategy exploited popular wellness trends to boost sales. By labeling the product as “drug-free” and using “plant-based” terminology, P&G misrepresented the true nature of the product, leading consumers to trust it as a harmless sleep aid when it contained a synthetic compound with known risks. The lawsuit seeks damages and restitution for consumers who were harmed by these misleading claims, as well as injunctive relief to prevent P&G from continuing its deceptive marketing practices.

Crosner Legal is committed to holding corporations accountable for false advertising and ensuring that consumers have access to accurate product information. The firm believes that consumers should not be misled into purchasing products based on deceptive branding and promises that do not align with the actual ingredients or risks involved.
